The short version
The WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API) is Meta's official way for software to send and receive WhatsApp messages. It is compliant, it scales, and it is the right choice for larger or risk-averse businesses. It also asks a lot of a small shop: business verification, a solution provider or developer, a server to receive messages, and per-message fees outside the 24-hour window.
Wabo AI Assistant takes the shortcut a small business can manage in an afternoon. It runs on your Mac or PC and links to your existing WhatsApp number as a linked device, just like WhatsApp Web. There is no server, no approval process and no per-message fee from Meta. The trade-off is real: this is not the official route, and WhatsApp can restrict a number that uses unofficial software.
Side by side
| Wabo AI Assistant | WhatsApp Business API (Cloud API) | |
|---|---|---|
| How it connects | Linked device (QR code or 8-digit pairing code), like WhatsApp Web | Meta's official platform, through a solution provider or your own integration |
| Status with Meta | Unofficial; WhatsApp's terms restrict automated access | Official and compliant |
| Setup | Install, scan a QR code, add your own Gemini API key | Meta business account and verification, provider or developer, webhook server, approved message templates |
| Your phone | Keeps working as usual; you can reply yourself anytime | Number usually moves to the API; coexistence with the app may be possible depending on country |
| Running costs | One-time license plus your own AI usage (Gemini free tier available) | Meta fees for template messages outside the 24-hour window, plus any provider fees; check Meta's current pricing |
| Where it runs | On your computer; it must be on and online to reply | In the cloud, available around the clock |
| Data location | Local database on your computer; only the text, images or audio needed for an answer go to Google | Meta's infrastructure plus your provider's or your own servers |
| Restriction risk | Present; the number can be restricted, no guarantee | Low when you follow Meta's policies |
| Proactive messages | No bulk messaging; at most a polite follow-up to people who already wrote to you | Allowed with approved templates and opt-in, within Meta's rules |
| Best for | Small shops answering incoming chats | High volume, multiple agents, regulated or brand-sensitive businesses |
Setup effort
To use the Cloud API you need a Meta business account, and in most cases business verification before you can grow beyond the starting limits. Then you need something to actually receive and answer messages: either a solution provider's platform or your own developer building a webhook server. Messages you start, such as follow-ups after the 24-hour window, must use templates that Meta approves in advance. None of this is unreasonable for a company with an IT budget, but it is a project.
Wabo's setup is closer to opening WhatsApp Web. You install the app, link your number with a QR code, create a free Gemini API key, and teach the assistant your products, prices and rules. You can try everything in the test chat before it ever answers a real customer.
Costs
With the API, the conversation itself can carry a cost. Meta prices messages by country and category, and template messages sent outside the 24-hour customer service window are billed. Providers usually add a monthly plan on top. Because the rates change, we will not quote numbers here: check Meta's current WhatsApp Business Platform pricing before you decide.
Wabo is a one-time license of $199 for one WhatsApp number, with 12 months of updates included and an optional $79 yearly update plan. The version you buy keeps working without it. Your AI cost goes straight to Google on your own key; the app shows usage and an estimated cost per 1,000 replies, and you can start on Gemini's free tier. See pricing for details and the 7-day refund policy.
Compliance and risk
This is where the official API clearly wins. WhatsApp allows people to use Meta's own apps, including WhatsApp Web, as linked devices. It does not grant that permission to third-party software that automates replies. Wabo is such software, so a number used with it can be restricted, and no behaviour can promise otherwise.
What Wabo does is keep its behaviour close to a person's: it only replies to customers who write first, waits a natural moment, shows "typing…", has an hourly reply limit and has no bulk messaging feature at all. That lowers the chance of trouble. It does not remove it.
Data location
With the API, your messages pass through Meta's platform and are usually stored by your provider or on your own server. With Wabo, conversations, customers, orders, appointments, your catalog and documents sit in a local database on your computer. Webizmo receives nothing, and there is no telemetry. To write an answer, the text, image or voice note involved is sent to Google Gemini on your own key.
When to choose the WhatsApp Business API instead
- You handle a high volume of chats, or several team members answer from one number.
- You work in a regulated field such as healthcare, finance or legal services.
- Your brand or contracts cannot tolerate an unofficial integration or a restricted number.
- You need to start conversations with approved templates, such as order updates or opted-in campaigns.
- You need replies around the clock without keeping a computer on.
In all of these cases, the API through Meta or an approved provider is the better answer, and we would tell you the same in person.
When Wabo makes sense
Wabo is built for small businesses that sell through WhatsApp and mainly need to answer incoming questions well: clothing boutiques, beauty salons, restaurants and cafés. If you want the assistant live this week, prefer a one-time payment, and want your customer data on your own machine, it is a practical option. The free trial lets every screen and the test chat work without a license, so you can judge it before paying. Download the free trial.
Frequently asked questions
Is Wabo an official WhatsApp Business API solution?
No. Wabo connects as a linked device, the same way WhatsApp Web does. It is not the WhatsApp Business Platform and is not approved by Meta. WhatsApp's terms restrict automated and unofficial access, so a number used with Wabo can be restricted. Wabo lowers that risk by only replying to people who write first, at human speed, with no bulk messaging, but there is no guarantee.
How much does the WhatsApp Cloud API cost?
Meta charges for certain message types, mainly template messages sent outside the 24-hour customer service window, and the rates depend on the country and message category. Prices change, so check Meta's current WhatsApp Business Platform pricing page. If you go through a solution provider, add their own subscription or per-message fees.
Can I keep using the WhatsApp app on my phone with the API?
With Wabo, yes: your phone keeps working normally and you can reply yourself at any time. With the Cloud API, a number traditionally moves off the phone app. Meta's coexistence option can let the WhatsApp Business app and the API share one number, but availability varies by country, so check with Meta or your provider.
Which option is better for a regulated business?
The official API. If you work in healthcare, finance, legal services or any field where an account restriction or an unofficial integration would be a serious problem, choose the WhatsApp Business Platform through Meta or an approved provider.
Can I start with Wabo and move to the API later?
Yes. Your catalog, documents and training stay on your computer, and nothing locks your number to Wabo. If your volume or your risk tolerance changes, moving to the official API is a normal next step.
