What the built-in tools do well
The WhatsApp Business app is free and comes from Meta, so everything in it is official. Its automation tools are simple and reliable:
- Greeting message: a fixed welcome sent automatically when a new customer writes to you, or someone writes again after a long gap.
- Away message: a fixed reply outside your opening hours or when you set yourself as away.
- Quick replies: saved answers you insert with a shortcut, so you do not retype your address or bank details.
- Catalog and labels: show products inside WhatsApp and sort chats into groups such as "new order" or "paid".
If you get a handful of messages a day and mostly need to say "thanks, we'll be right with you", these tools are enough. They cost nothing, carry no account risk and take ten minutes to set up. Use them.
Where they stop
Every built-in automatic reply is fixed text. It cannot read what the customer actually asked. A greeting cannot say whether the blue dress comes in medium, an away message cannot tell someone the price of a haircut, and quick replies still need you to be there to pick the right one.
That gap is where most WhatsApp sales are lost: a customer asks a specific question in the evening, gets a generic "we'll get back to you", and buys somewhere else before morning.
What an AI assistant adds
Wabo reads each message and writes an answer from what you taught it: your products, options, prices, photos, documents and rules. In practice that means it can:
- Answer the actual question, in the customer's language, and send the right product photos from your catalog.
- Find the matching product when a customer sends a photo or screenshot, and understand voice notes.
- Merge three quick messages into one considered reply, after a natural pause with "typing…" shown.
- Take an order step by step (product, option, quantity, name, phone, address, payment, then a summary to confirm) and notify you on your own WhatsApp.
- Book appointments from your services, staff and working hours, offering free slots and sending reminders.
- Hand the chat to you when it does not know, instead of guessing.
hi, is the linen shirt in the photo available in M? how much
Hi! I'm Mia Boutique's AI assistant. Yes, the white linen shirt is available in M for $39. Here it is. Would you like me to note one for you?
A typical evening, two ways
Picture a boutique that closes at 7 pm. At 9 pm a customer writes asking whether a dress comes in a larger size and whether it can be delivered by Saturday. With only the built-in tools, the away message replies: "We're closed, we'll get back to you tomorrow." The owner sees it at 10 am, answers, and by then the customer may have ordered elsewhere.
With an assistant on the shop computer, the customer gets an answer within a minute or two: the size is in stock, here is the photo, delivery details follow your rules, and would they like to order. If the question is something you have not taught it, such as a custom alteration, it says a team member will follow up and leaves the chat for you. You still read everything the next morning, but the sale did not wait for you.

Using both together
You do not have to choose. Wabo connects to your WhatsApp Business number as a linked device, so your phone app keeps working: catalog, labels and quick replies stay where they are. A few practical tips:
- Avoid double replies. Turn off the greeting message, or the customer gets your fixed welcome and the assistant's answer back to back.
- Keep an away message only for downtime. If your computer is off overnight, Wabo cannot reply, so an away message can cover those hours.
- Step in anytime. When you type in a chat from your phone, Wabo stays quiet in that chat for a set number of hours. You can also switch it off for a contact or exclude people saved in your contacts.
When the built-in tools are the better choice
- You get few messages and can answer them yourself within a reasonable time.
- Your questions are repetitive enough that a quick reply covers them.
- You do not want any risk to your number from unofficial software.
- You do not have a computer that stays on during business hours.
If your volume grows and you need official automation at scale, look at the WhatsApp Business Platform instead; our API comparison explains the trade-offs.
When an AI assistant pays off
If customers ask about sizes, prices, availability or free slots, especially outside the hours you can answer, an assistant that understands the question saves sales. It fits boutiques, salons and cafés that sell through WhatsApp every day. Start by teaching it your business and testing in the built-in test chat, which works in the free trial without a license. Frequently asked questions
Can I use Wabo with the WhatsApp Business app?
Yes. Wabo links as a linked device, so it works with both regular WhatsApp and the WhatsApp Business app. You keep your catalog, labels and quick replies on your phone and can reply yourself anytime. When you type in a chat from your phone, Wabo goes quiet in that chat for a few hours (3 by default).
Should I turn off my greeting and away messages if I use Wabo?
Usually yes, or at least rewrite them. If both a fixed greeting and the assistant answer the same first message, the customer gets two replies. Many owners keep only an away message for times the computer is off, worded so it does not promise an instant answer.
Are WhatsApp Business auto-replies official and risk-free?
They are built into Meta's own app, so they are the official way to send automatic replies and carry no extra account risk. Wabo is not official: it connects as a linked device, and WhatsApp's terms restrict automated access, so a number used with it can be restricted.
Does the WhatsApp Business app have AI replies built in?
The app's classic automation tools send fixed text you write in advance. Meta has been testing AI features in some regions, and what is available differs by country and changes over time, so check the app itself for what you have.
